Quantum turbulence

Speaker: Donnelly, Russell J.

Abstract: Quantum turbulence is turbulence in superfluids where circulation is strictly quantized. These fluids include both 3He and 4He, and each has several regions of quite different behavior. One might think that the details of such turbulence would be completely different than in classical turbulence. Much to our surprise, that is not necessarily true. This lecture will touch on the reasons for this, and will also show why turbulence near absolute zero does not have infinite Reynolds numbers, even though the superfluid has absolutely no viscosity.
