M2 branes, Chern-Simons matter theories and RG flows

Speaker: Halmagyi, Nick (CNRS, Paris)

Abstract: In the last year there has been remarkable progress in understanding the 2+1 dimensional conformal field theory living on a stack of membranes in M-theory. In the UV the membrane theory this is known to be 2+1 dimensional YM however providing the IR description was a long outstanding problem. I will provide an introduction to the ideas behind this progress and try to convey the general importance of Chern-Simons matter systems in 2+1 dimensions.
