Wilson vs. The Bubble of Nothing : Can we save the Universe by turning on the light?

Speaker: Alex Flournoy

Abstract: I will begin by reviewing semiclassical instabilities in gravitational theories and pose an unresolved problem that arises when one considers Einstein-Maxwell theories with nonvanishing Wilson line backgrounds. In the second part of my talk I will connect these issues to string theory and in particular highlight their implications on the issue of closed string tachyon condensation.
