Problems with printing, web browsing and so on

Printing

To install a printer, you are welcome to ask your IT contact. But you can do it yourself.

Currently we have two printers, HP LaserJet 4100 downstairs and HP LaserJet 4300 upstairs. The first step for the installation is the same for both computers.

  • Go start -> settings -> printers and faxes.
  • Click add printer. You are welcome to Add Printer Wizard. Click next.
  • Both printers are local. Select Local Printer..., no Automatically detect.... Click next.
  • Select Create a new part and Standard TCP/IP port, next, next, ..., you are welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard.
  • You have to type the IP address. The IP address for HP 4100 is 150.203.179.177, its port name is tp-hp, IP for HP 4300 is 150.203.179.176, its port name is tp-superhp, and this particular port is HP Jet Direct one. Click finish to finish the Add Standard Printer Port Wizard.
  • Now you have choose the driver. Windows knows the driver for HP 4100, just choose HP LaserJet 4100 PS in the complete list of drivers. To get the driver for HP 4300, copy the folder PS from the local address \\rsphysse\pc_public\printers\Theophys HP 4300\Win2000_XP, paste it to you machine, and indicate its location for the Add Printer Wizard.
  • Click finish.
  • Before printing, you have to change the default options of the printers (duplex unit installed, paper is A4 and so on). The options are to be changed in the Device settings tab and in the General -> Printing Preferences -> Adwanced tab.

Hm.., the better idea is to ask your IT contact.

Internet.

In the proxy settings of your browser you must indicate HTTP proxy as wwwcache.anu.edu.au/proxy.pac with the port 80.

For the Netscape

  • Launch Netscape,
  • Go Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies.
  • Slect Manual Proxy Configuration, type at the HTTP Proxy line wwwcache.anu.edu.au/proxy.pac, port 80.

For the Internet Explorer

  • Go Start -> Control Pahel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.
  • Select automatic configuration script and type address wwwcahe.anu.edu.au.
  • Select Use a proxy..., type address wwwcache.anu.edu.au/proxy.pac, port 80

Alternative proxy setting for Netscape is netserve.anu.edu.au/proxy.pac.

Mail

Configuring the Mail account settings in Windows (any of Mail programs), you may point out POP Mail Server as well as Outgoing SMTP Server as rsphymail, port 110, with your Unix username xxx105.

Maintaining the Machine.

Typically, the new Windows machines come with the single user account. The users are welcome to create your own user accounts, protect them by passwords, download from the web and install any helpful freeware software (e.g. Acrobat Reader, Netscape, Mozilla, editors, DiVx and so on).

If you wish to install the newest version of LaTeX, please ask IT contact, the installation disk is avaliable.

Please note:To re-install the system and to download video via Web is strictly forbidden. Your download traffic is traced.

Connect to rsphysse

You may access you rsphysse files by mapping a network drive. At the first, at the address line of your Network places type \\rsphysse\pc_public\patches and click Win2000_plainPassword. Reboot your machine. Then go to My documents, right click on My network places and choose Map Network Drive. Type \\rsphysse\xxx105 in Folder and click different user name. Type you user name xxx105 and type your password. Then you will have to type the password again and see your files on the file server.
