Some useful tips for Linux on new machines

Solution of printing problems, Internet problems and so on

Printing

To install a printer, you should ask IT contact first. The installation of a printer demands a root password, the general School policy is to keep the passwords in a secret.

Internet.

You may have problems with the Web Browser (Mozilla firefox in you distribution). Usually problems are caused by incorrect proxy settings.

  • Launch the browser, select
  • Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Connection Settings.
  • In the Connections Settings tab select Manual proxy configuration and type at HTTP proxy line wwwcache.anu.edu.au at the port 80.
  • It is recommended not to add the suffix anu.edu.au to the No proxy line.
